An offbeat denomination that wore out its welcome decades before its demise, the three dollar gold coin lingered for 35 years, with the vast majority of issues consisting of fewer than 10,000 pieces. Commercial demand for such pieces was low. This 1870 piece comes from the middle years of the denomination, and the issue's production of only 3,500 pieces is consistent with the pattern of low mintages. The honey-gold fields offer distinct reflectivity with a touch of haze at the margins, and the devices are well-defined overall. Highly attractive. This coin is tied for highest grade by PCGS with one other. No others are graded higher by either services.
